At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Yeshua. He said to his servants, āThis is John the Baptistāhe has risen from the dead! Because of this, these powers are at work in Him.ā For Herod had arrested John, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because John had been telling him, āIt is not permitted for you to have her.ā Although Herod wanted to kill John, he feared the crowd because they considered John a prophet.

Just a question … do I understand correctly that the Jews of the first century were looking for a messiah (savior), but not necessarily The Messiah, Son of God?
Correct. There were various understandings of what/who the Messiah would be. Most of them did not involve a divine Messiah and all of them believed that this Messiahās primary duty would be to free them from Roman oppression.
