The Crucified Son of God
Yeshua was clear with his disciples; he came to conquer the world, he came to defeat the ruler of this world. Yet this battle was to occur in a way that no one in their right mind could have ever imagined. Rather than gathering an army and launching an assault on the Roman occupiers, like all the previous would-be messiahs had attempted, he came to be crucified by the Romans. There was no other option, Yeshua made it clear that crucifixion was the way he must die. This was scandalous! This was sheer madness! Today the true impact of this idea eludes us. Very few realize the true horror and true scandal of a crucified Messiah. In this teaching we will investigate the background to crucifixion the reasons why Yeshua had to be crucified and what it means for us today.
For Jewish people ask for signs and Greek people seek after wisdom, but we proclaim Messiah crucifiedāa stumbling block to Jewish people and sheer madness to Gentile people, but to those who are called (both Jewish and Greek people), Messiah, the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Dear Mr. White, I just wanted to comment on this recent teaching. I typically donāt make comments but you really need to hear this. Your teachings have provided me with new insight and also reinforcing many of the same ideas that I have been thinking but am unable to articulate and put those thoughts in order. Every Shabbat I listen to you and in particular your thoughts on the apostolic scriptures. The message of a kingdom to come is certainly a different path than what I had been taught and understood in the past. I so wish that my husband was still alive to hear this based upon the historical context that you have placed it in. He loved history and this would have answered so many of his questions. RYan, The comment about the soldiers “hatred of the Jews” brought to mind something from Joel Richardson …. which is that Roman soldiers weren’t “Italians”. They were Arabs….who hated Jews. APparently Rome hired or conscripted those willing to soldier in their armies as they conquered.
Was crucifixion common to Roman persecution of people in their conquest of western lands, through Europe….England, etc.?
I believe so, but I havenāt studied out a lot of that specific history.
Such a difficult subject… I read every holocaust testimony I can find; have not come across someone hearing a Christian singing hymns as they entered the showers…….not saying it didn’t happen. But I have heard testimony that the Shema was heard sung or chanted in that place many times. Was their faith in the God who is One, for nothing?

Every few minutes another thought comes to mind, owing to the subject and excellent teaching, I think. On this being a better world…..maybe it is in the west, but did you know that the number of slaves is higher today than in any other time in history? Heard this through orgs who deal with trafficking. Did the ancients sexually brutalize infants as is done today? Killing a child and mother by slitting their throats seems so much less cruel than say raping a 10 year old 40 times a day. It seems as though the world is not improving…..hope someone can show how wrong I am here! My heart often is just so sad when I hear of the cruel acts of men.
1/3 of all people in the Roman Empire were slaves…and Rome was considered the civilized part of the world back then. I canāt really speak to what some organizations are claiming without seeing their data. Iām certainly not trying to minimize the issues today, but rather show how much worse it was back then. Aside from a few countries, slavery is criminalized throughout the world.
There certainly are cruel people today just like there were back then. Thatās not going to change any time soon until Yeshua comes. But the acceptance of such cruel behavior is nowhere near the level it was back in Roman times. Evil people are forced to hide their wicked actions, while back then it was just an acceptable part of life. It was common practice for Roman men to have a boy lover along with their wife. I canāt comment to the number of times they were raping their boys per day, but nobody was saying it was wrong; it was common and even an expected thing to do.
I must disagree that crucifixion is the “ultimate” human evil. In no way do I downgrade the evil of crucifixion, butwould maintain that (how do I say this without offending) raping months old babies and children to their bloody deaths is ultimate evil. Widows and orphans remain the most vulnerable, thus that cruelty is worse than any other.
The point made in Is 53:8, he was killed by a perversion of justice is enlightening. And, about the Messiah still suffering even as a helpless child in the grips of evil man, he “like a lamb was led to slaughter.” It is enough to break the hardest heart.
