Ancient Near Eastern Influence of Idolatry in the Modern World

In this teaching, we will lay the ground work for understanding idolatry and idol worship in the ancient Near East in order to give us context for understanding modern symbolism and its linkage to idolatry.  In the subsequent video(s), we will look into how the ancients actually worshiped Ba’al and Asherah and link that to some of the modern movements such as Occupy Wall Street, unions, socialism/communism, abortion, Islam, and more.  If you feel offended by any of the subjects discussed, I do ask that you hear me out.  Within some of these movements there is a good factor, but we have to understand the base motivation and its connection to idolatry.

  • Have you ever wondered if there is more to worship than what we think of when we hear the word?
  • Did you ever wonder what the relationship between a servant and a worshiper is?
  • Do you wonder why the ancients worshiped small figurines (idols) that obviously had no power?
  • Have you ever wondered where some of the symbols we see in our modern world originated from?
  • Do you have questions as to what exactly constitutes idolatry today?

You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me, but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
